Artbreit with distance? Several thousand people in the old town of marktbreit, on squares in courtyards, empty buildings, in front of paintings, in front of sculptures, at music venues? "Artbreit doesn’t work with tight confines and two-meter spacing", says claus-peter berneth, one of the organizers of the grob art festival in the southernmost city on the main river.
And therefore also the consequent step: artbreit will not take place this year, will be cancelled. So much for the bad news. The good news: the festival will be postponed. By a year to the weekend before pentecost on 15. And 16. May 2021.And another good news from marktbreit: all artists who were booked for artbreit 19 in 2020 have confirmed to come again the following year.
Idea originated in the eastern USA
And so it will probably take another three years until artbreit can celebrate its 20th anniversary. Anniversary. The idea for such a festival was born almost 40 years ago in the berneth family at a campus festival of a small university in the east of the usa. The atmosphere of the open-air events in particular had been so impressive that the idea carried on, until the family settled in marktbreit.
Initial skepticism about the idea in marktbreit quickly gave way, helpers were found in the heimatverein and the altstadtfreunde marktbreit. Good weather, the atmosphere and the music, an unusual poster and the participation of five market-wide innkeepers turned the idea and the initially small concept into a huge success. And in addition, there was something very special that still exists today: the involvement of the residents of the town. They provided yards, houses, stores, electricity, water and much more, and they love to give the guests the impression that a whole town is celebrating here – and all that without commerce.
Concert with crossover band uwaga
What keeps artbreit young? The basic concept stands, but is subject to constant expansion. At the beginning of every year there is artbreit for a long time "only" every two years, if only for organizational reasons. In addition, among other things, the saturday with the night of open galleries, in which the visitors can look at far more relaxed. And also the opening concert on saturday evening with renowned international artists in the church st. Nikolai expanded the festival. The concert was planned this year with the crossover band uwaga, which has also already confirmed for 2021.
On sunday numerous artists from all over germany and the neighboring countries will come to show their work. Martin steinert, dagmar feuerstein, paul kemmer in the sculptural area, the painter nikolai lagoida are only a few names. Many bands and the artbreit children’s program are waiting for the weekend before whitsun 2021.
